Wayanad is Kerala's northernmost major hill destination, and it's a longer drive from Kochi than Munnar or Thekkady - worth planning as a dedicated trip rather than a quick add-on.
The route covers roughly 280-290 kilometres and takes six and a half to seven hours, running through Thrissur and Kozhikode before climbing the Thamarassery ghat into the plateau.
Given the drive length, most visitors either start very early or plan an overnight stop partway, rather than doing the full trip in one long stretch.
Wayanad's attractions - Chembra Peak, Edakkal Caves, Banasura Sagar Dam - are spread out, so a local taxi for sightseeing once you arrive is usually worth arranging separately from the transfer.
October to May is the most comfortable travel window; the June-September monsoon brings heavy rain and fog on the ghat climb.
